QA Automation Engineer
About This Role
Our client is looking for a senior QA Automation Engineer to lead a focused two week workshop for their existing software team. The goal is to level up the team's automation practice: what best practices looks like, which methods and tools fit their stack, and how to bake quality into every stage of the delivery pipeline. This is not a theory course. You'll spend the first days getting under the hood of the platform they've already built, then design and deliver guidance, patterns, and working examples specific to their codebase, architecture, and workflow. This is a hands on engagement for someone who treats testing as engineering, not an afterthought, and who can set the standard for a team that will carry the work forward after you leave.
Fully remote, two weeks, well compensated. Flexible on timing for the right person.
What You'll Do
• Come in and understand the existing software: architecture, stack, current test coverage, CI/CD setup, and where the pain actually is. • Assess the current state of automated testing and identify the highest leverage gaps. • Teach best practices and methods across web applications, APIs, and back end services, grounded in real examples from their codebase rather than generic demos. • Recommend and demonstrate a test strategy and framework approach tailored to their platform, with a clear rationale for the choices. • Build working reference implementations the team can extend: end to end, integration, and regression examples that run against their actual system. • Show how to integrate automated tests into CI/CD so quality gates run on every commit and release. • Cover practical territory: API testing, data validation, debugging flaky tests, root cause investigation, and performance/load testing where relevant. • Run working sessions with developers, product, and DevOps so quality ownership is shared rather than siloed. • Leave behind clear documentation: strategy, conventions, patterns, and a prioritized roadmap for what the team should tackle next. • Mentor and upskill the engineers in the room, championing testability and a culture of quality that outlasts the engagement.
What You Bring
• 10+ years in QA automation or software engineering with a strong testing focus. • Deep proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Java). • Extensive hands on experience with automation frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium. • Strong experience testing REST APIs (e.g. Postman, REST Assured, or code based approaches). • Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD quality gates (e.g. GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or CircleCI). • Solid knowledge of version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows. • A track record of setting test strategy and mentoring other engineers. • Demonstrated ability to ramp quickly on an unfamiliar codebase and give useful, specific recommendations fast. • Comfort teaching and facilitating: you can hold a room, answer hard questions live, and adapt to the team's level. • A sharp eye for edge cases and a methodical, root cause approach to debugging. • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to Have
• Prior consulting, training, or workshop delivery experience. • Experience testing data pipelines, ETL processes, or data heavy applications. • Exposure to cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes). • Performance and load testing experience (e.g. k6, JMeter, Locust). • Familiarity with AI/ML driven or automation focused products. • ISTQB or equivalent QA certification.
