About This Role

Vice-President, Technology

Database Architecture & Legacy Modernization

Location: Fully Remote Type: Full-Time, Executive Reports to: Studio Managing Partner

About Our Client

Our client is a venture studio operating at the intersection of the building supply, manufacturing, and custom job shop industries. Rather than backing a single company, they build and scale a portfolio of operating businesses across this ecosystem — from established manufacturers and distributors to new ventures they launch from the ground up.

These are industries built on decades of institutional knowledge, and much of that knowledge lives inside aging systems: ERP platforms, order and inventory databases, quoting and estimating tools, and shop-floor applications that have grown organically over many years. Our client's thesis is that modernizing this data infrastructure — without disrupting the operations that depend on it — is one of the highest-leverage ways to create value across the portfolio. That work is why this role exists.

The Opportunity

Our client is hiring a Vice-President, Technology to own the technology vision across their venture studio ecosystem, with a primary and hands-on focus on database architecture and legacy database modernization. You will lead the effort to assess, re-architect, and migrate the data platforms that their operating companies run on — turning fragmented, legacy systems into a clean, scalable, and well-governed data foundation.

This is a builder's executive role. You will set strategy and also stay close to the schema, the migration plan, and the data. You will work across multiple businesses, meaning your decisions and reusable patterns compound in value as they are applied portfolio-wide.

What You'll Do

Database Architecture

Data platform strategy — define the target-state data architecture across the studio and its operating companies, spanning transactional systems, analytics, and integration layers. Schema & modeling — design normalized, well-documented data models for ERP, inventory, quoting/estimating, order management, and shop-floor operations. Performance & reliability — own query performance, indexing strategy, high availability, backup/recovery, and data integrity across mission-critical systems. Governance & security — establish data governance, access controls, and standards that scale as the portfolio grows.

Legacy Database Modernization

Assessment — audit existing legacy databases and applications across portfolio companies to map data, dependencies, and technical debt. Migration — plan and execute migrations from legacy platforms to modern, cloud-ready databases with minimal operational disruption. Modernization patterns — build reusable migration frameworks, data-mapping approaches, and tooling that can be applied repeatedly across the ecosystem. Business continuity — sequence modernization so that live operations — shipping product, quoting jobs, running the shop floor — never stop.

Leadership & Strategy

Serve as the senior technology voice across the studio and its portfolio companies. Build and mentor a lean, high-caliber engineering and data team; establish standards, and where useful, select and manage vendors and partners. Partner with operators, founders, and studio leadership to align technology roadmaps with business goals and timelines. Evaluate build-vs-buy decisions and make pragmatic technology choices suited to industrial, real-world environments.

What You Bring

  • Deep, hands-on expertise in relational database architecture, data modeling, and performance tuning (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL).
  • A proven track record leading legacy database modernization and large-scale data migrations in production environments.
  • Experience designing and operating data platforms in the cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Fluency with ERP, inventory, order management, or manufacturing/operations data — and comfort working alongside the systems that run physical businesses.
  • A senior leadership track record: setting technical direction, building teams, and communicating clearly with non-technical operators and executives.
  • Comfort operating with autonomy in a fast-moving, multi-company studio environment.
  • Background in building supply, manufacturing, distribution, or custom job shop / fabrication environments.
  • Experience in a venture studio, holding company, or private-equity-backed multi-company setting.
