Why Canadian Engineers Prefer Working for US Companies — And What That Means for Your Hiring

There’s a dynamic in the Canadian tech market that most US hiring teams don’t fully understand, even when they’re actively trying to take advantage of it.

Canadian software engineers - particularly the strongest ones - actively prefer working for US companies. Not as a fallback. Not because they couldn’t get a Canadian job. As a first choice. They pursue US remote roles specifically, they position themselves for them deliberately, and when they land them, they stay.

Understanding why this is true changes how you think about Canadian hiring. You’re not competing with Canadian employers for this talent. The pool self-selects toward you. That changes the supply and demand picture, the quality signal embedded in the talent, and the strategic leverage you have as a US company trying to build a great engineering team.

The Supply-Side Reality

Go looking for candid discussion about Canadian developer compensation and career trajectories, and you’ll find consistent themes in the engineering community: Canadian tech companies - even the successful ones - struggle to match the compensation trajectory and equity upside available at US-scale companies. The Hacker News community has discussed this at length. The Reddit engineering communities are blunter about it. The engineers who’ve navigated both sides articulate it clearly.

The Canadian tech ecosystem has produced genuinely great companies - Shopify, Clio, Wealthsimple, Cohere, ApplyBoard. But the density of high-growth, well-funded technology companies in Canada is lower than in the US. There are fewer Series B and Series C companies operating at scale. There’s less venture capital. The public markets that reward engineers with meaningful equity appreciation are thinner. Toronto and Vancouver have strong tech ecosystems, but neither competes with the Bay Area or New York in terms of the sheer number of companies offering elite engineering roles.

The result is that the best Canadian engineers face a choice that their US counterparts don’t: stay with Canadian employers at a compensation ceiling that’s structurally lower, or access the US market remotely. For engineers who are good enough to make that choice - and that’s the key point - the calculation isn’t close.

Why US Companies Win This Competition Without Trying

A Canadian engineer with strong distributed systems experience who wants to work on problems that push that experience wants to be at a company operating at meaningful scale. Canada is a different country with its own employment law and its own currency, but it’s not a different professional world. The engineers are operating in the same tech ecosystem you are, with the same reference points and the same professional culture.

This is nearshore hiring without the nearshore trade-offs. Nearshore typically implies some timezone offset, some communication overhead, some integration friction. Canadian hiring doesn’t have those costs in any meaningful way. The offset is zero to three hours. The communication is English as a first language. The culture is the same. The concept of nearshore applies only in the technical sense - geographically adjacent - not in the operational sense.

The vetting still matters. The Canadian market has strong engineers and weaker engineers, the same as any market. Canadian hiring has the structural advantages without most of those costs.

US companies that understand this stop thinking of Canadian hiring as a workaround for a problem they’re having. They start treating it as a primary talent strategy for a specific reason: the talent is excellent, it wants to work for them, and the operational overhead of making it work is low.
